Good games are good.
There's really not that much else to it. You yourself played through DKC2 and it's one of the most loved DK games. Ocarnia of Time, Mario Bros 3, Deus Ex are all well received and talked about endlessly, on numerous sites internationally.
If you asked people what their favorites were when it came to niches then you'd probably get more diversity, no doubt. The problem is that we're in an industry were big players are all vying for eyes on their products.

Lotta people also get shaped by the videogames they play as they grow up, they tend not to deviate too hard
