I wouldn't say the gameplay is great (combat is a very protracted process), but it's carried by its characters. Quite rare to see a game with three such unscrupulous individuals as the only playable protagonists (my favourite being Father James 'fans of contemporary poetry deserve death' O' Flaherty) but you get a lot of pathos for them as the story progresses. Also has a great soundtrack.

ME1 is the best of classic Bioware and a huge step up from the other ME games.

Batman Arkham Asylum has a really unique and inventive combat system (that many games copied, poorly), tight pacing with a great mix of puzzles, exploration, and bossfights, tons of extra fun high-score focused scenarios with the combat and predator rooms, and without the bloated open world of its sequel. It's by far the best superhero game out there.

UFO Defense has a bug in every single DOS version, the Steam version, and the GOG versions of the game that makes all five difficulties identical to the easiest beginner difficulty, regardless of what you choose. Somehow it was never caught that the game is perma stuck in babymode.

Just shows that no one even actually played this shitty game to ever notice that all five difficulties make ZERO difference.

What's even funnier is that players complained it was too easy (because it was stuck on babby tier difficulty), so rather than anyone, including the devs, discovering the game was massively bugged, they instead made the kusoge sequel that no one cares about brutally hard to compensate for their own incompetence. Just brilliant.

Damn right, Larian has the RPG genre in a chokehold, whether you like it or not. The level of quality and attention to detail present in every aspect of their games is just mind boggling. And the combat is just sooo fucking good. It just puts other RPGs and even strategy games to fucking shame.

DOS2 is unquestionably the single best game I've played in probably at least 15 years, maybe the most fun and engaging I've played of all time. I compare it to the many other RPGs of past and present, and it's just not even close, they're not even in the same ballpark, DOS2 is just so far and away better.

Even these re-releases haven't fixed the damn issue and reviews don't even mention it. Hell, the sequel made the game harder because people thought it was overall easy but still had no idea that every single difficulty was the same. Legitimately NO ONE gives a fuck about these games, now or back then. We're not talking about the two highest difficulties being the same, or one small aspect of the difficulty being bugged. No, the LOWEST BABY SHIT DIFFICULTY APPLIES TO EVERYTHING, EVERY SINGLE PERSON WAS PLAYING ON BABY SHIT DIFFICULTY WITHOUT REALIZING. Honestly, if I was the dev of this game, I would feel straight up suicidal knowing the interest in my game was so fake and nonexistent that people don't even realize something so basic and fundamental to the absolute core of the game. It's like a scene straight out of American Psycho or something, you just can't even believe it's reality.

It's just a game people engage with on the absolute most surface level, so I have no interest in it. If XCOM EU or DOS2 had all difficulties identical, people would absolutely 100% realize and it would be blatantly obvious because people engage with these games on a much, MUCH deeper level.

There's really not that much else to it. You yourself played through DKC2 and it's one of the most loved DK games. Ocarnia of Time, Mario Bros 3, Deus Ex are all well received and talked about endlessly, on numerous sites internationally.

The flow of the game is interrupted every time you have to go inside the menu to heal/cure yourself, regenerate your stamina and change your camouflage though which is way too often and harder difficulties just makes you have to open the menu even more by making your stamina drain faster. If menu surfing is "fun" "gameplay" in your minds more power to you I guess but that's not my idea of a fun time.

In MGS2 you can skip the incessant codec calls from your girlfriend and the Colonel but you can't skip having to menu dive in MGS3 on top of still getting codec calls constantly too. MGS2 also actually punishes you for alerting the enemies even on lower difficulties. Problem with both MGS2 and MGS3 is that the tranq gun is too OP (I also seem to remember that the time that guards are knocked out in is shortest in MGS1 which has no tranq). MGS1 is less sophisticated with its stealth mechanics due to its age and being an early 3D title but it also has far less stuff that interrupts the gameplay prior to MGSV that ditches the codec shit entirely.

I'll save gaming.

it does. mgs4 is where they added ubiquitous modern controls. the only reason you would like 4's gameplay above 3 is if you are a cowadooty player and just want a similar shooter experience to everything else you have ever played. mgs3 feels distinct in its controls and pressure sensitive buttons make the mechanics of playing the game far more engaging than anything that came after it. crouch walk is also a goddamn mistake, having a middleground that gives you speed and camo index is so damn shitty (not to mention it makes the least sense to add that in the game where you are geriatric). the environmental interactions in mgs4 are way downplayed, too. whereas mgs3 had all sorts of things you could interact with to affect the later game (like blowing up supply depots or taking out the tracker in the survival menu or the ghost who calls you a cannibal), mgs4 had a small number of sections where you could help either side of a meaningless military battle. this is also not to mention chapter 3 which is absolute bullshit, takes what could have been an interesting mission idea and makes it a total slog. mgs4 basically gives you infinite ammo as well (can buy it from the start menu, costs credits which you have basically infinite of) which means that you never actually have to conserve anything.
octo camo was cool, though. mgs4 also had the ability to switch which shoulder you are looking over in aiming mode, something which all TPS games should do/have but don't because they are retarded.

youre not missing out desu. The writing gets praised so heavily because its a VN and the complete absense of gameplay means its writing can be the closest equivalent to a straight up book, and midwits think that the closer something is to a book the better the writing must be by default.

In reality the writing is a fucking mess. The game had too many writers so the pacing is fucked by random npcs/encounters having a fuckhuge dialogue tree that doesnt really say much and mainly exists for the writer behind it to self fellate themselves ala a sentence expansion game. The game is also trying to do 3 things: a political intrigue plotling (where the majority of the shitposting for it comes from), a detective plotline, and a redemption plotline for the main character. But all 3 of these plots fight for space with one another and it fucks the whole thing up. Its also blatently obvious the devs just wanted to have a game where they talk about politics the entire time but knew it wouldnt sell, hence the half assed detective schtick it has going when the mystery element is weak as fuck and has an out of nowhere twist conclusion.

The game first appears to be about solving a murder mystery, but if you go in with just that expectation you're going to be sorely disappointed. The dialogue is memorable and humorous at times.
