Steam DRM is good because its easily removable. All games utilizing Steam DRM are basically preserved for all eternity. As Gabe said, piracy is a service issue, and people simply prefer the services on steam over pirating games. Valve also has the only proper competitive FPS, Counterstrike, arguably the only competitive game that's not a completely dead joke right now. I also think it's good that valve encourages people to play together and has created a platform that easily enables that, even if I don't have time for that these days.
