Another half hour of Bridgman. I usually find his sketches fairly easy to digest and breakdown but these hands were kicking my ass. Idk, just felt a lot harder to get through than usual.

I'd suggest doing some form exercises (stacking cubes and tubes with some thought to perspective) would really help add some more weight and dimensionality to your sketches.

But if this is purely a method of relaxation that you're happy with then continue as you are.

Tried something new; drawing Aqua from KH in the pose of a random overhead stretch I found online. Feels off, and I think it's because I gave her the real woman's legs despite Aqua having thinner anime legs. Please critique, this is my 3rd week drawing and a big thing I was working on was getting proportions right because I kept fucking them up. Is this any better?

Genius pratice idea:
Many times while watching a movie I'll get a flash of inspiration from a scene. Maybe it's a gun fight or a cool samurai duel. I want to draw it but I don't just want to copy reference. Instead what I can do is take the scene and shift it to different perspectives. Then I can still use reference for object and clothing etc. Brilliant isn't it.

Long arm is looong. Really, you know the proportions. everyone does, it's concretely defined by all anatomy and figure books. What matters is the fact that that in perspective, the proportions change from when it faced head on. An arm that is divided roughly in half at the elbow no longer appears that way when its going forward. The forearm will appear longer. Learn perspective and how to divide rectangles evenly in perspective then you can really utilize proportions.

no. there are good old books like george bridgman's constructive anatomy but loomis's perspective hasn't stood the test of time. go with scott robertson's how to draw or even use the free handprint's elements of perspective. as someone who started with loomis, don't recommend it for perspective. i agree with his attitude toward art and how it should be taught/learned but loomis walked so the next generation could run

Like other anons said, look up Robertson book how to draw. You can search title of sections in YouTube and most have someone doing the lesson live if the way the book teaches is confusing. You can also use norlings perspective made easy as a primer because it keeps it simple and is quick to get through. Robertson has you drawing cars and spaceships by the end to show off your skill so its pretty cool. Just take it slow to wrap your head around all the concepts, you'll start to envision perspective in everything you see.

I’ve spent like a decade too frustrated to figure out how my Wacom tablet and Krita works. I’ve watched YouTube tutorials and still don’t get it. I’m trying to just doodle in an art program. I can’t figure out how. Like sketchy pencil classroom doodles. I don’t know how all these brushes and functions work like how to change pen size on the fly and it’s frustrating to my absolute pea brain.

These sketch v2 brushes are really good. The PDF guide is good too.
Set your brush size key shortcuts some where around the lower left hand side of the keyboard so you can keep your hand in one spot to ctrl+z for undo, quickly change brush size, space to pan around the canvas etc. Takes some time to get used to the tools but the most important part is just getting lots of actual practice sketching.

have you ever thought of opening your krita configuration and LOOKING at what the keybinds are? Do you not do that in any videogame?
By default, you can also hold shift and clickdrag to change the brush size. But frankly? If you just want to do sketchy pencil classroom doodles, you don't even need to change the brush size.
The default pencil brushes are good. I'm particularly fond of Pencil-2 and the mypaint ones.

Because real life photos are easier to interpret to our brains without exaggaretions. For art, you need to exaggarate. You need to show off the gesture more, you need to stylize it for it to convey what you want. Never do 1:1 copy from IRL reference, because then it looks stiff and stationary. I'm still /beg/ so my advice isnt' anywhere near final. Anyways, just start with tracing over figures so you get an understanding of your proportions. I chose a bad image here since they aren't anywhere close to the proportions I draw naturally. Just stick figures, basically.

There's also lines you'd need for the face (like loomis shit) so your eyes won't be in wonky positions. Everything has proportions that must be copied over and referenced until you have a good enough idea to draw a figure confidently.

You can turn pre-made poses into characters or OC's. When I was younger, I'd use bases to draw hair and clothes on to make characters I liked but those are more restrictive than the drawing over method I'm using here.

Why would you use ai references at all? Say you want a certain pose of a certain character in the style of a certain artist, but a reference with those 3 elements are nowhere to be found because that artist hast drawn that character in that pose. Promoting in that scenario, which is the only one I can think of where an ai reference is 'needed', means you are delegating THE artistic part of the process, that is, creating something new from previously existing elements.

Grabbing a ref of the pose, the character and a specially representative opus of the inspiring artist and coming up with what you envisioned is the part that you will always struggle with as an artist. By delegating it on AI you might as well just post AI slop at that point.

Gesture drawing helps with that. You have to see the figure as a whole and depict it with big, expressive (C, S, I) lines.
Grids do exactly the opposite though.

Consider using a lower opacity brush for gesture drawing. Don't know if it'll be an issue with you, but I notice using some "ink" brushes stiffen my lines and affect the way I draw.

Tbcf there are different approaches to gesture. A popular one is the "CSI" one anon outlined, popularized by Proko but originating from Watt's atelier if I'm not mistaken, but you also have e.g. John Buscema's in Comics The Marvel Way, which is just a scribble giving you a fuzzy idea of the finished figure, or the one proposed in the Famous Artists' course, etc. I think what they all have in common is that gesture is just a rough general idea of the subject that you deploy before drawing and detailing it

any alteretd state can have different outcomes. most of them bad yesterday i was exhausted to hell but not able to sleep. tried drawing but the concentration was nil and it turned out shit. depending on how drunk, i would just enjoy the buzz till a bit later and only then draw once you feel more in charge. the best you draw is freshly after waking up and slowly coming to terms. well rested and fully charged.
