Trails in the Sky didnt have a story to write home about either. SC was particularly pretty bad because of the amount of time Sieg bailed out the party, shit always bothered me, but it did have characters. Estelle was a good character to follow, Agate was great, Olivier was great, Zin/Zane was cool, Kevin was a great protaganist, Richard was a justified antagonist and they addressed that, giving him a satisfying character arc as well. Weissman made for a good villain in SC as well.

The story wasnt amazing, but there were enough good moments and music between the fluff to make it worth playing. The problem later games have is that the cast of characters are even more shallow than Sky's, which a lot of them werent really winning awards to begin with, and even the returning characters either had their stories told and take up too much screen time, like Lloyd in Hajimari, or are just actively made worse

Crossbell had Randy and Tio, and while girls such as Elie, Noel, and Rixia were hot, those characters were completely worthless. Rixia only ever comes back to have her tits grow another two sizes with each game release, which is based. Class VII, and Nu Class VII sans Altina, and Musse had similar issues, and Musse's character had a lot of chaff and dogshit to reach anything interesting.

Daybreak could have fixed this but they decided to not have any of the characters other than Quatre, Swin, Nadia, and Renne do anything, with the later 3 being some especially retarded shit.

tl;dr- the cast of the games have gotten worse and it becomes harder to mask how bad the general story writing is when you cant write characters that are remotely competent

No, Zero is pretty solid stand alone, but the writing is debatably the worst it has been. They wanted to get you to like the world and the characters by saying everything was "better" or "more evil" or "more fucked up" than sky, instead of actually showing these better evil or more fucked up things. Arios is a complete clown and waste of a character, Tio's backstory being compared to Renne's was laughable and uninteresting, because you dont even get to see it from her perspective, and Jochiam being worse than Weissman, while probably true, doesnt get time to really shine in that regard. Deiter is a diet Richard villain wise

Ao was even worse. Though the trade conference is arguably the best chapter in the whole franchise, the rest of the game is not only trying to undo a lot of the plot threads Zero set up, or at the very least sweep them under the rug, but the game also insists on having twists for the sake of twists. Also the gameplay was the worst it has been in the franchise, which is an accomplishment considering sky's was nothing to write home about

Zero is comfy but drops the ball with the final chapter as it needs to generate tension for a climax where if the game wasn't sold in two parts wouldn't need one. Combat is a bit too easy as Randy and Tio's crafts are too strong.

Ao is an incredible game for roughly 80% of its runtime (basically only the first chapter and final dungeon are lackluster) and is the last time combat ever requires any thought whatsoever for optional combat objectives like holding off sigmund or arianrhod on the highest difficulty. Introduces the master quartz system which the series has not strayed from yet.
