The problem is that he looks like a different person. And extremely ugly too. Pic related. He just conveys a very different vibe from the original games.

He had this entire appearance and personality that reminded me of a Russian. He transmitted calmness and coldness, his facial expressions did not convey much of his emotions. Of course this is partly due to the PS2 graphics, but I think it was essential for his character.

In the remake he can't keep a poker face to save his life. He has very uncanny and extreme facial expressions like pic related. Instead of being calm, collected and elegant, he often looks like an ADHD clown. It butchered his character for me.

I vividly remember this cutscene and the "I've picked up a few new moves!" line. It had great delivery and felt sarcastic. He says "I picked up a few new moves!" with an enthusiastic voice, but he is keeping a straight face and shrugging in a kinda ironic way. And this fits the scene, because he is essentially saying "As per usual cool new moves, but you achieved nothing other than teaching me new tricks, nevertheless I respect you and this is why I like these fights".

In the remake he says "I picked up a few new moves!" while smiling, borderline laughing, and his body language is also more genuine. It turned his statement from ironic/sarcastic to more genuine, which also reduces the depth of what you can infer from it

I think the most bizarre thing here is that it is a 1:1 remake released shortly after a remaster that ported the original game to modern hardware. It's a completely pointless cash grab.

I hope this brings Konami to remaking MGS4, which has a great case for remaking. It is supposedly impossible to port/remaster that game because it was built in outdated architecture, so they have to remake it from scratch. A 1:1 remake would be absolutely perfect for that.
