Basically in the USA there are two types of holidays: Real holidays like New Years Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Most reputable companies will give you those days off and pay you for them. The only exceptions are if you're in a service industry job like retail or restaurant work, in which case you'll probably only get Thanksgiving, Christmas, and maybe Easter. Then we have what are known as "federal holidays" or "bank holidays" that are basically fake holidays the government invented to commemorate different things and give themselves the day off like Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Juneteenth, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day. Nobody actually celebrates these as holidays, but they inconvenience everyone because government and bank employees get those days off while almost everyone else in the private sector still has to go to work. Some companies will close for these days, but not pay their workers because they're not considered "paid" holidays. Public schools are closed as well, so the parents have to take off work to look after their kids. Then of course we also have generic commercialized festivals like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, and Halloween that are working days for everyone.
