this, a lot of anons are missing that point
Thorfinn wanted to commit all of his resources towards a non-conflict solution
he wanted to force himself to come up with other means of problem solving
kind of like a reverse Cortes, who burned his ships to force his men to fight and not even think about running

and it's not even a problem that it's a bad idea
Thorfinn isn't some genius
his education consisted of stabbing men in forests
he's illiterate for fuck's sake
there's no reason to assume his plans are perfect
it's okay for him to be kinda naive

the problem is he DIDN'T go full in on peace
he was a passive leader
he allowed his village to go the traditional route
he himself was all-in on diplomacy, but he let others do as they please
when faced with opposition, he kept giving up super easily, both Hilde and Einar called him out on that
in the end, his mindset didn't evolve beyond "if there's trouble, gtfo"
and the manga has the gall to pretend like all that was maturity

and even THAT would be okay, if only manga admitted it all led to a failure
Thorfinn had made an honest attempt, after all
but he didn't succeed at his main goal and it needed to be clearly stated
it's like when people die of cancer
don't call that a victory because the patient "fought hard"
it's dishonest and diminishes actual victories
