He's said something akin to that himself, when there's a lot of stuff going bad, he's very stressed out, but then if everything is going smoothly, he can't calm down either and just finds some new thing to start stressing about. I assume it must be some weird childhood trauma, but all these projects always seem to be coupled with some doomsday scenario that he has to come in and fix (we must go to Mars so that there's a backup civilization, we must move to solar power so that we don't all die, need to buy Twitter to make sure free speech doesn't go away or something, he founds an AI company on two separate occasions to make sure it doesn't turn into some evil Skynet thing, and now the politics sidequest because he needs to fix politics before the woke AI communists follow people to the Mars utopia)

As a kid he was a scifi geek with an abusive dad, who similarly worries about paranoid, outlandish apocalypse scenarios.
