The twist I had in mind is that the game actually takes place on a terraformed Mars and it was only the human colonization THERE that got wiped out; the humans on Earth turn out to still be fine, setting the futuristic Earth up as a potential location for a "fish out of water" direct sequel in the vein of Link's Awakening or Majora's Mask.
