Isn't that the question with anything in our world? You can either compartmentalize it or you can't. People who still love Harry Potter... I don't really blame them. They can decouple when they're ready, or when they have a sufficient emotional reaction to do so. You can't talk someone out of something, and shame isn't persuasive.
