That's not true, there's a subset of Japanese people who do like tattoos. Tattoos in visible areas can make your life more difficult, mainly with onsen stuff, but it's not impossible. Especially if you're a gaijin because no one is going to think the glasses-wearing white dork is a top yakuza official.
