>is it really still popular?
The modding aspect does surprise me as well. The truth is that in-game AI is actually quite primitive, and once you figure out how it works, it doesn't feel as unnerving ever again. And it's not like the developers don't know it, they purposefully ramped up the difficulty in the Choir Main Hall (the "final boss" section of the game) by adding tons of Brutes that you're expected to avoid using prior knowledge of their behavior. The Justine DLC makes things even more obvious by forcing you to be in very, VERY close proximity with the monsters, something the main game doesn't do. Now because of the main threat of the game being so easy to read, mod devs have to go through some extensive hoops to keep things entertaining, and as you would expect, they usually fail. While I've seen some clever ideas, in most cases it revolves around adding more cheap jumpscares or shifting focus to storybuilding, which wears out its welcome very quickly. And even clever ideas can always fall flat because of the mod developers' inexperience with the engine or its limitations, which is understandable because of Frictional's engine being in-house and not used by anyone else. So I really don't know how the TDD modding scene still exists and if it's still able to impress, you'd expect every trick in the book to be common knowledge at this point.
>the dev peaked with penumbra black plague
Frictional's other titles never interested me, can't say much.
>they milked the ip dry
"Milked" is a harsh word, but it's true that Amnesia could've been handled better. With through-the-roof expectations after TDD, A Machine for Pigs ended up being too short to be called a full-fledged sequel (there wouldn't be anywhere near as much hate if it was a DLC), and Rebirth ended up being painfully mediocre. In my eyes, Rebirth is the only "bad" Amnesia game (without having played The Bunker), so it's more "not living up to expectations" than full-force, soulless milking.
