They probably did it the Quake does it, by sampling the lightmap under the player. You could also do it by tracing lighting to the player, that's how I'm doing my entity lighting. I've backlogged an idea to have this influence how enemies spot you because at the moment LOS is just binary.

My 20% was all in the old Java build from DD14, I'll upload it onto itch near release in November. That had half of the weapons already, enemies, pathfinding. Once I had the melee weapon in I felt the gameplay loop click together.
Apart from rewriting the engine in C/C++ and four years in between on hiatus, other projects, or an abandoned level editor, I've been only doing polish and content ever since.
