Rogues are meant to be high execution precision instruments. They scout ahead, they find and retrieve hidden things, they inflict crippling debuffs on the enemy, and then they take out a critical opponent in the backline before they even know what's happening. All the while they're sneaky and impossible to pin down. They're not supposed to compliment the frontline brawlers like the warrior and the paladin, if anything they're a foil to the cleric. A rogue is meant to be a support unit, but rather than supporting the team by aiding them, they support the team by prying open every crack in the enemy's armor.

But both designers and players are too stupid to do the archetype justice. Designers don't want to constantly build around the high finesse a rogue craves, and players prefer the path of least of resistance in the form of an immortal meatshield running down a hallway, or an instant death spell fired from a safe distance.

No class is more neglected than the rogue.
