Once upon a time (maybe even now) clubs / sanctioning bodies / promoters wouldn't allow racers to use antifreeze as they believed a it would make a coolant dump even slipperier. But water whetter was allowed, so guys used it for it's anti-corrosive properties.
Then, folks noticed that their cooling systems worked better. It was because pure water cools better than glycol, but they chose to believe that water wetter was the reason (because correlation equals causation to the plebs.)
