I like John/Vris too but similar to how I feel like johnroxy is "consolation prize" johnrose, johnvris feels like making up for johnrose and tavriska not happening. I think they work really well together and their interactions in canon are really cute and awesome but I think tavriska and johnrose are the pairings that should've been canon.
John did have more backbone than Tavros that he could probably match her energy more, and him being from human culture where being nice and honest is respected and being a murderer is bad made her begin to understand that her life philosophy was not the only possible way to live; it fits that when she first meets john is when she first starts actually feeling bad for all the bad things she does, even if she still tries to hold onto the idea that the ends justify the means. But I think ultimately her meeting John and making him basically a rebound where she actually begins to understand her true feelings for Tavros; and maybe John, his true feelings for Rose; would make for the better ending. Like a really poetic encounter wherein a Light player meeting a Breath player from another world makes her understand where she messed up in her relationship with her own Breath player, and a Breath player meeting a Light player from another world begins to realize how he truly feels about his own Light player.
Even if I think johnvris is cute I can't help but think about how often when talking to John, Vriska could not get Tavros out of her head, and basically continued thinking about him to the very end, long after we were meant to believe she had got over him.
