I don't know how copyright works in Japan and China(lol) but this would most likely be fine in the US. Possibly they just did it to avoid having to fight it, even if they're right it still costs money. And there might be a contract clause against doing this which he may violated. Contract clauses are often more restrictive than the law, to cover their own ass for the edge cases where an infringing situation might occur. Like using a recognizable trademark rather than something that's at the level of collage work.
I swear all these fucking companies are run by weasels who just accept the existence of lawfare. (I know it's because they want the ability to hammer others for petty bullshit, but still...)
