And the fact that Twilight was the first one to understand how Spike felt this speaks volumes about her own struggles. She is a Princess, but just giving her wings doesn't make her FEEL like a Princess. I find S4 to be very weak overall, particularly on the execution of Twilight's character development, but this scene shows that the show still retained the potential for meaningful character payoffs.
In conclusion, Equestria Games is a great episode. Not only do I consider it the best Spike-focused episode, I think it's the best episode in S4 and one of the best in the show's entire run. It's got some great character moments, the jokes are fucking superb, the moral lesson is very meaningful, it does an excellent job of weaving worldbuilding with the plot, and there are a lot of lessons about good storytelling to be drawn from it.
