if it's in the drywall you can do that, probably won't ruin anything unless there's a huge drywall anchor behind it then you'll be patching a huge hole instead of a bit of spackle/caulking. But if it's in the stud you'll make a huge mess of things.

you can take an old flat screwdriver and pound on the screw until you create some grooves and then twist it out, you can drill it out and break off the top of the screw, you can use pliers to twist it out if you have the hand strength, etc
