The first "Buffington" sight is this Model 1884. Carried through on the Model 1888 but the Krag Models 1892-1896 sights were simpler like the pre-1884 sights on the Trapdoor. Then comes the Model 1898 "Dixon" tangent-leaf type, then a Buffington-inspired "Model 1901", then back to the Dixon for the Model 1902 sight and the original rear sight on the Model 1903 rifle. Then back to a Buffington-type with the Model 1905 sight which manages to stick for 37 years until the M1903A3 rear sight. Attempts were made to introduce a receiver-mounted rear sight to the M1903 rifle several times between 1905 and 1942 but Ordnance always said "too expensive".
