There's been phones in the market that have removable lte cards and wifi cards , iirc they used mpcie or m.2 so you could literally throw it away and buy a new one for an authentic fresh iemi, or upgrade to a new technology.
Other Linux phones also allow you to simply change the iemi by accessing the LTE tranciever over the i2c or whatever and issuing commands. Even rooted Android phones can do this

Motorola has a pad array similar to that on their Motorola play series where you could attach different cases, it was basically a raspberry pi goio on the back of the phone, everything Fr m a camera to a boom box would utilize this.
