I finished Yakuza 0 Director’s Cut by completing it to 100% before concluding the story.
>Story
The story is not changed, apart from about 30 mins worth of cutscenes. You won’t see any of the cutscenes until the second half of the game.
I will just say that most of the new cutscenes are actually very good. The one outlier which shouldn’t have existed is the Lee death retcon, as well as Majima saying he’ll fix Makoto’s watch, which harms the impact of the post-credit scene.
“Retconning” the loan shark’s death made sense, it would inform the players to be aware of Shibusawa as the hidden threat instead of being a literal last-minute villain.
The gameplay cutscene of Kiryu and Kuze after their last fight was converted into a cinematic cutscene, this is good and affects nothing.
Billiken’s death retcon made sense, he has many connections, but he still was booted out of the force. He was only shot once, and in the back, while Nishitani got five bullets in his chest. Since Nishitani wasn’t revived, it affects nothing, and introduced the continuity of the Kijin Clan having all their patriarchs named after him. The scene of Majima calling Billiken after confronting Shimano provides proper closure, and makes Majima understand that he and Nishitani are more alike than he assumed.
The scene of
The car scene with Kiryu and Nishiki is funny, it also affects nothing.
All in all, the story is exactly the same. Most of the new cutscenes add nuance, while one outlier ruins a few aspects.
>Gameplay
It’s literally the same game.
Autosave exists, and you can save anywhere. No Kiwami style switching.
>Other
The English dub is good. I’d say that Yong Yea, while not the best, still has very good delivery on most occasions. The Majima side of the story had excellent dub voice acting, Kiryu’s side was mid to good.
The game is not worth $50. It should’ve been $40, at most.
Redlight Raid is lame. It was okay on a run or two, but gets repetitive.
