Maintenance is generally much more expensive then the price of buying a horse in the US outside high end sport horses. It's not uncommon for people to try and give them away for free or abandon in some area, especially in Arizona, Nevada, or any of the Reservations. it use to be $300-500 a month to maintain a horse without free property/grass in 2012. I imagine its more expensive then that now.

And I will confirm that men get pushed out of horse industry because of the women. As women got more and more involved in horses, the more drama there is. Almost all high end horse trainers and riders are still guys though. And all the real cowboys (the ones that actually do work with cattle) are still guys too.
