The union of male and female is inherently spiritual. It is the joining of two complementary opposites into a whole, from which a new divine thing arises. This is why they are mostly centered around religious activities. The more secular cope is that people experiencing mental illness in that time didn't have the proper / modern means of expressing and treating it, and often defaulted to spiritual avenues. Either way, this is the reason why modern trannies are mostly insane - they are either spiritually anemic, or their madness is not funneled into divine madness. It's also why a lot of them are intelligent.
The more you explore the European tradition (and some non-European traditions, like Hinduism [which is still disseminated from Indo-European practice] and Egyptian), the more you'll see instances of "trannies". The word "transgender" is a lot like the word "gay", in that it is a modern and secular invention to describe something that was already an established and understood phenomenon. It furthermore pollutes the idea with modern conceptions and baggage. Trannies are hermaphrodites (which is being used separate from the medical term, which is more recently called "intersex", although one could argue that the root cause of transgenderism is a neurological intersex condition itself). There are a lot of examples of hermaphrodites in myth and ancient spiritual practice.
The hardest pill to swallow is that it's Judaic thought and tradition which demonizes them. The desecration of the concept of the holy hermaphrodite has been a concerted effort by Jews and the cults and practices they fostered, like Christianity. Anything that comes from the Judaic tradition is inherently opposed to this concept, and most concepts that are sexual in nature. This is because Jews are inherently neurotic and follow a puritanical law. It's one of the reasons Jews and Christians in Rome were so controversial and unable to assimilate, aside from their theological differences.
