Warhammer dwarfs refuse to use weapons that couldn't double as tools as something of a point of pride. For this reason, they don't use swords either.

This isn't true across settings. LotR dwarves absolutely use spears. That said, they seem to be more proud of their axes. Their battle cry is "Baruk Khazâd! Khazâd ai-mênu!" after all, which means "Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!"
