Their purpose (and the purpose of all game developers) is to make money, they do this by making games people enjoy playing and spending their money on. They were most successful at this when they were making Dragon Age 1 and Mass Effect 2/3. Contrary to your version of history, BG1/2 was not their peak, they had far more success with Mass Effect 2/3 and Dragon Age than they did with those titles. Mass Effect 2 also reviewed better than BG1/2.
