the species at the top knew from the get go- that "intelligent" life would get lonely, eager to make contact with something similar to itself, expecting some sort of salvation or exchange of ideas and innovations, all you get is a murderous psychopathic species that is truly enlightened to the nature of existence- to kill all else that isn't them and now they dominate the cosmos.
