Dark Souls was literally nothing special by 2011.
It was literally just a multiplat rehash of Demon's Souls, which's main appeal a couple years earlier was the fact that it was a symbolic middle finger to the rampart "casual gaming" boom that had just started, essentially deeming traditional "hardcore" games as a dead, obsolete trend for big name publishers.
