This is the Wonderbread of gun ownership. Everyone tells a first time buyer to get these because they're the equivalent of common loot.
If you need something to "do it all" you're going to need to be able to hit at range, so a bare minimum of 7.62x51 REAL FUCKIN NATO is what you need. A decent AR10 will outperform a M1A at this, and need less maintenance than a FAL or similar.
As for a sidearm, 9mm has been shown to be pitifully inadequate in far too many scenarios (pic rel as ever)
