Lets not pretend in real life we don't stuff that falls outside of the official naming conventions. M1, M2 and M3 carbines are just versions of the same weapon and between M3 and M4 we've had a whole host of short rifles in official military service that have not been adopted as the M4 until the M4 was adopted.
