Kinda odd how there are only a handful of characters with known surnames and even then, it's either non-canon (Misty Waterflower, Brock Harrison) or only occurring in one form of media (Dawn Berlitz). Given how often AniMay's family gathers together, you would think someone would have mentioned their family name at least once.

It would be canonically wrong though, as tree-related surnames are reserved for families where one family member is a professor.

It is, or else the story would be called "Drought".
I'd like to think she was actually competent, but since everything was handed to her during her journey, she became overconfident and lax. After a hundred wins in a row, she started to believe she’s some kind of prodigy, resulting in her putting less effort into her strategies. Why strategize when your overleveled starter can just one-shot any opponent? Why be cautious when your magical pets can protect you from any danger? With that, she totally underestimated the danger she was in when facing Kyogre. That ancient force of nature seemed to her like another side quest. And then she was caught by surprise, when Kyogre was actually a real threat or landed a few lucky crits, taking May’s strongest mons out. Without the god-given power of quicksaving, she started to panic, making more mistakes in the process.
