It works for Transformers because their combiners are still Transformers in their own right. I don't hate these Zords, I'd certainly choose them over that ZAP trash in a heartbeat, but they just don't do enough to justify being sold separately. If you give a kid just one of them the play value is very poor.
The Imaginext Zords didn't combine, but each one included an articulated figure and had multiple play features which made them fun for kids on their own. I bought them to have something my niece could play with when she came over (was about 3 at the time) and she played with those things for hours at a time. It also helped that a large scale Goldar the Zords could interact with was relased along side them.
Playmates' Zords don't offer that same level of play. If you don't have the entire set to create the Megazord, I just don't see kids having much fun with them. And if that's the case, they should have just been sold as a complete set in the first place.
