Cocaine and Kalashnikovs: The Colombian Collapse
September 25, 2022

Yet another nation has collapsed in civil war. Colombia joins the countries facing intense civil strife as it splits into four factions. Each bloc, however, contains a moderate cartel presence.

First, the Republic of Colombia, led by Juan Barragan under a military junta. From 2014-17, Barragan served as the Commandant of Colombian Armed Forces. Since 2018, he has been the ambassador to South Korea, but upon hearing news of factional fighting across the nation, he quietly flew back to Colombia and reached out to his military contacts. He leads the most internationally-accepted regime among the factions.

Second, the National Liberation Army (ELN), led by Antonio Garcia. The ELN is a far-left guerrilla insurgency group involved in the continuing Colombian conflict, which has existed in Colombia since 1964. The ELN has been classified as a terrorist organization by numerous Western nations.

Third, the Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, led by Dario Usuga. The Self-Defense Forces is a far-right paramilitary and drug trafficking group. Its leader, Usuga, has been accused of sending dozens of shipments of cocaine to the United States, killing police officers, recruiting minors, and sexually abusing children, among other crimes.

Fourth, Carlos Patino Front, led by Ivan Marquez. The CPF, also known as the FARC dissidents, are formerly part of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), who have refused to lay down their arms after the Colombian peace process came into effect in 2016, or resumed their insurgency afterwards. FARC dissidents have been responsible for several attacks on the Colombian armed forces. These fighters are believed to be heavily involved in the production and sale of cocaine.
