Interesting write-up, Anon. When we retreat into fantasies out of fear for pain, we put ourselves in places that lack passion. And because passion is essential for the Otaku, we slowly lose our sense of self.
The true Otaku LOVES reality. He does this because he believes in perfection, which is why he is attracted to the anime girl, to the moé, who is the Platonian ideal of femininity in a certain sense. But any idealist will eventually reach the point of realizing the evils and heartbreak of the world, and he will have to choose whether to accept an imperfect world while still striving for perfection, or to retreat into a delusion with no pain and NO PASSION, and so become a shell of who he was.
Look at the Crucifix. It’s called the Passion of Christ for a reason. Ain’t no Passion without Pain. We must accept the reality of pain so that we can embrace the idealism of a true Passion.
The world may be burning, but that’s exactly when we need idealists the most. Not the reality-hating otaku Miyazaki talked about, but the ones who love reality enough to demand it be better.
I’m not saying you run for governor or whatever. The Otaku of the past, even just by creating art, DID improve reality because they introduced through their art the philosophy of all true Otaku; that is, the standard of a Perfection.
