Nah, he's right, barrel stripes just make a model uglier. You could have added more color and style to the gun barrel better by doing a heat effect like the picture instead, wtih stripes moved to the main turret body which just looks half-painted.

It's your model so however you like is fine, just seems weird going to extra effort doing special freehand to make it look worse.
