Love my boy. I think there's a lot of specifics to Rance that makes his debauchery work.
>Consistent on his moral ground of "cute girls dying = bad", and the lengths he goes to avoid this. (Anything else is fair game).
>Gets knocked down a peg regularly, and has weird hang-ups like fear of commitment, being forced into a submissive position or of showing affection that get joked about.
>Often supported by a decent male cast for contrast as well, some more competent than him, others not.
>He's a comedic character in an otherwise often bleak fantasy world. Many of the games often make a point of having a lot of drama and death when he's not present or tied up elsewhere, so it's always a bit of a relief when he barges in with no fucks given and puts the world to rights.
I think it speaks of how, on top of personal charisma, a lot of what makes morally dubious characters interesting is how they're presented in the story's context.
