Unironically yes. Japanese players understand the puns, references, and allusions better than any other player. Even those fluent in japanese are going to miss things that a native speaker, especially one who actually grew up and lives in japan, got instinctively.
Theres even a gap between what someone who's from Tokyo experiences compared to some hick a couple hundred km away.
Someone who doesn't speak english, and is unfamiliar with both British civil war history and Catholic/Protestant theology, isn't going to understand Paradise Lost compared to someone who is.
The western influences in Persona are interesting, and erasing the japanese parts of the game are a disservice to what the authors intended.
Just because some teenager in Japan doesn't realize the VR attendants are named after a 19th century gothic-romantic novel doesn't mean its ok for you to avoid the Japanese parts of the game.
