Modern Japan even before Imperial Japan basically had to kinda manufacture itself and created things like Shinto as you think about it and a kinda national identity. They actively opporessed a lot of historically present local Shintoism and Buddhism at the time and in so doing their own population. Germany did to but in a very different way.
