RS is just the beta test for the modern Pokemon formula because they threw away all the shit they were cooking initially for the game, which was an even closer retread of Gen I than what we ended up getting. DP is a fleshed out version but they were clearly more obsessed with fleshing out the lore than the actual story. Platinum patches a lot of DP's holes, specifically with Cyrus. XY gets no excuses, it's basically DP but about the Holocaust instead of Religion
