I think they both thought they were the suave manipulator in the relationship (during the highs of their ego and narcissism overtaking self-loathing and doubt), even as they got genuinely attached to each other.
A lot hinges upon whether they both get caught up on the same page with what was on that phone call, in the aftermath of Tenna being fixed and rescued. Fate may have been unkind to them, but if Tenna and Spamton could both meet each other on their own terms they have more agency going forward. Spamton said he's "never doing that again" but who knows, he was ranting about killing Tenna but it seems like a mix of coping with the prophecy knowledge and fantasizing about doing it himself to have "freedom."
