Characters in films are not privy to information that the audience has, and an idea that Choctaw and and Irishman should be buddies just on principle wouldn't matter to individuals at the time, especially considering the vampire says help "I'm being chased by Choctaw" and the people he sought refuge for said "bullshit Choctaw haven't been around these parts in years". So again where is the context to whom would find the whole situation off? Only people would've been the couple, and they weren't trusting anyone initially.
