Nobody is brainwashed to immediately change their behavior.
One of the major contributors to a person's psychological perceptions is popular culture.
One of the major contributions to popular culture is popular media.
If we say you begin at 0 in a perfect world when meeting a new person, then your goal is to influence them with your own personality, skills, abilities, and mind to get them to 50, or 80, or 100, in whatever area.
If people are continuously inundated with an idea in popular culture that describes your identity, whatever that may be (for example:White Male) as "less than", then you must influence someone the same way, to the same target: 50, 80, 100, whatever.
The difference is, instead of starting at 0, you start at -5. This is irritating.
I cannot make it simpler for you. Good luck.
