Localization is tolerable when it's not being done by complete morons - certain words and phrases, particularly puns, idioms, turns-of-phrase, etc. just don't translate that well and need replacement to not be clunky af.
ex.
>Original (in German)
>A: Du bist echt ein Schotte!
>B: Du ein echtes Backpfeifengesicht hast! Aufs Maul?
>Raw Translation
>A: You are a real Scot!
>B: You have a real slap face! On the mouth?
>Clarification
>A: You're stingy with money!
>B: You're annoying and I want to punch you.
>Adaptation
>A: God you're a tight-ass!
>B: How'd you like a mouthful of teeth?
The trouble starts when you've got assholes who use localization as an excuse to insert memes or social agenda nonsense into a work instead of just doing the fucking work and identifying colloquialisms that actually fit the intent and tone of the original.
