I'm pretty sure it's the opposite - where now most our holidays have been commercialized and became incredibly bland, a chance to have a party and a few days off is taken with far more gravity in harsh environments where you otherwise have to be constantly on edge.
That's the impression I got from doing my research on Inuits and the like, they took their rituals and events very seriously. There was a chapter in an old book an anon linked about an elaborate event that went on for four days or so.
