You could consider buying a 80$ gem pack or two for some variety. Can help quite a bit if you are lucky.

I'm also scared of the expansion. Only got 1 month to save up, but I'll cash in another 5500 gems to kickstart things.
Game is not very F2P friendly because you can't vial everything and the gibs dried up for anyone joining after launch.
