He's trying desperately to find an excuse for Luke to be a suicidal, depressed hermit doing nothing all day. Thus, he comes up with a really terrible thing happening to Luke to justify the hopeless depression. Safe to say he's just trying to find a way to fit a square peg in a round hole. Mark expressed in earlier interviews he thinks Luke's the most hopeful person in the galaxy and wouldn't end up like his St self.
