Welp that's it. I started a couple of years ago with the Thrawn trilogy and I just finished Crucible, the "main plot" of the EU is done and there's little enough left outside of it as I read most of that as well. I'm glad I did it was a balm for the wounds of the Disney trilogy and in spite of the fact the ying-yang faggots got the last word in defining the Force(and on some really fucking dumb "logic" as well - the Dark Side is not conflict and change, you cretinous dipshits, it's concentrated evil that results from people's evil deeds).
Man this is a wierd feeling; there's always been More Star Wars out there, in theory, if I wanted it, until now. Anyway thanks for reading my blogpost.

In spite of whatever Sheev's Sithy intentions may be, the Empire actually did streamline and improve governance. It actually was much better than the Old Republic, and if we go by Legends, it literally did become much better than the Old Republic once Sheev was out of the picture.

As talented as McQuarrie was and as important as he was to the films, his job was to produce illustrations that conformed to Lucas's creative inclinations. There would be no Darth Vader if Lucas hadn't given him these instructions and then helped to refine his illustrations. And we see the same level of quality when Lucas works with other talented artists--a level of quality many others have failed to produce even when working with the same talent.

Thanks to JJ and Rian having poor understanding of scale, contempt for the preexisting setting, and little interest in doing worldbuilding of their own, there's plenty of opportunity to create a good setting out of the ST era without actually contradicting anything we saw on screen.
In Ep.7, we see that there's already a Resistance movement active even before the fall of the Republic, that the Republic does not hold Coruscant, and that the Republic is just a few planets in one system with a couple Mon Cal cruisers in orbit. Then in Ep.8 we see that there are independents supplying arms to both the Resistance and First Order, with the galaxy's upper class seemingly unconcerned that the Republic just got destroyed. And then in Ep.9, we see that Lando is able to gather up a fleet of literally thousands of capital ships within just a couple days after Sheev reveals himself, despite both the Republic and Resistance having been destroyed already.
Within this framework, you could have a setting where the Republic had been reduced to a rump-state after the losses it sustained against Thrawn at the end of the Mando-era triggered the collapse of state power and balkanization. Now, in the ST-era, the Resistance/First Order conflict is basically a Cold War style proxy war fought between the various independent post-Republic polities seeking to shape the future of whatever the next galaxy-spanning regime will be. The party are operatives working for one faction or another doing glownigger shit in the conflict zone, eventually discovering that the First Order are being backed by something far more sinister than just the other post-Republic factions, as the resurrected Palpatine plotline gradually plays out.

I liked the individual introduction of each OG character one by one in a sort of weird, self contained mini arc each one of them had (han solo fucking around, I guess you could easily rearange that to him working as a spy/intelligence offcier instead of him running away from his family for no reason, Leia being a general and whatnot, Luke being a weird hermit) etc.

I'd also recommend the "real Sequels", eventually. Undertaking to read them all is a big task, took me a couple of years, but overall it was breddy gud. Even the Vong War stuff that even fans of it will admit was a bit rough at times was fun enough to read IMO, but at least give the Thrawn trilogy a go - in spite of a little "this was written before the Prequels existed" jank around the Clone Wars background it shits on the Disney trilogy like it'd just eaten Taco Bell for a week.

Tech in SW universe just seems to have plateued long ago in general. We are told that modern ships are better than the OR-era ones (the Hammerhead-class for example has been upgraded multiple times over the millenia it was in service, so while visually the late Republic-era version still looked the same as the OR-era, its capabilities would be superior), but the differences seem to be largely incremental. I think the only technology that actually saw considerable development in the film-era and beyond (aside from planet-exploding superweapon technology) is interdiction fields, as while the old Republic experimented on it (and Revan stole their Interdictor-class cruiser for his version of the Sith Empire), it was far less effective than the later version of the tech, and the whole idea seems to have been largely abandoned until the Empire developed their interdiction ships. And by the New Republic era the technology had been developed to the point you could fit an interdiction field generator on a regular ISD without needing massive obvious domes on the ship.
Other than that, stuff like shields, hyperdrives, and repulsorlifts seem to be more or less the same. It's only when you go back to very early Republic era and before that you actually see technology that's noticeably more primitive. For example during the time of Xim the Despot starship shield had not yet been developed so ships were covered in laser-reflective armor, and hyperspace navigation required computers too big to be fitted on the typical ships so instead most ships made use of navigation buoys that contained the computers to calculate the jump to the next buoy in the chain of jumps.

Hi, new to Starwars RPGs and figured I'd just ask before I go googling through everything. I mostly play 40k Only War/Deathwatch slop games where we run through a mission to kill aliens & then extract. My friends & I want to run a campaign where it's the same, but as Imperial storm troopers. I don't want to homebrew or just mishmash-homebrew starwars into a campaign to run one. Which RPG book would best fit for this? Even if the flow of the game isn't so mindlessly combat driven. Mostly just looking for something that kind of gives enough of a gear & other support for roughly forcing a class into a stormtrooper occupation roleplay wise.

Made by the same company that did the 40K RPGs but uses a different dice system. Entire book focusses on mission style campaigns as soldiers in the Star Wars universe. Core book focusses on the rebellion but it is easy to play imperials. Storm Commandos might encourage your players to start with more xp but I wouldn’t recommend that for new players, maybe start them in the academy or something.

He actually originally appeared in the old (now Legends) Star Wars comics where he even fought Darth Vader, so they re-canonized him as the main lead in the Bounty Hunters comic, which follows his adventures as well as several other new OCs along with all the guys from the Executor bridge in ESB. It's a fun little series that suffers from being both Disneyslop and Marvelslop together, which in the current era means crossovers galore.

Make you think you're fighting an actual Rebel fleet when its just some poor saps who decided to fight back when their pleas for mercy went unanswered.
