From what I recall he was a 1st Lt. in the Army for 8 years who was incompetent enough to get relegated to some bullshit job and that when it came to "up or out" it ended up being "out".
This is probably the main driving force behind his seething hatred of the west. You see, if you fail to make it in the military, then if that military is actually gay and weak and so is the whole country, and it's the adversaries who are based and strong, then you're not a failure but rather a "disillusioned veteran".
