Shanks couldn't get Buggy to understand his feelings and ultimately split from him, Akainu got so caught up in 'absolute justice' he failed to realize just how much Borsalino was suffering, Crocodile moves from scheme to scheme and crew to crew avoiding forming real bonds with people and openly voicing how he trusts no one, etc.
Mihawk is the pinnacle of this. Despite becoming the world's strongest swordsman, someone who can rival a Yonko by himself, he has nothing. He lives alone on an island, teaching monkeys how to fight, he spends his days squashing rookies and drinking wine. He's rebuffed Shanks' attempts at recruiting him to his crew, and only joined the cross guild because it was convenient to him at the time.
